Dr. Katharina Aubele studied geology with a focus on applied geophysics and satellite remote sensing at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich and the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. In her diploma thesis she dealt with the paleogeography of today's Western Mediterranean in the Mesozoic. For this purpose she carried out extensive field and laboratory work, which included rock and paleomagnetic measurements.

After graduation Dr. Aubele worked for four years as a research assistant at the Institute of Applied Geophysics of the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich. In this capacity she expanded on her rock and paleomagnetic work in the Western Mediterranean through detailed investigations of rock samples from Southern Italy, Spain, Southern France, and Sardinia. The results of this work have been published in several scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

After successfully completing her doctoral studies, Dr. Aubele worked for over two years as scientific director of the working group geothermal energy at the Munich School of Engineering of the Technical University of Munich. There she was responsible for the coordination and technical support of several interdisciplinary research and industrial projects in the field of geothermal energy, which included the departments of engineering and hydrogeology, water chemistry, power plant engineering, energy system modeling and electrical engineering.
